This week has been the 'week of transplanting'. Been working around the clock to get as many plants in the ground before sunlight drops under ten hours a day and temperatures stabilize in the mid teens. One big learning curb this season has been growing our various salad crops: when to sow, how often, how dense, what varieties, etc. The challenge is also how to best prep beds for 'direct sown' crops in our no-till system. Do we cut or pull or tarp? Do we tilth or just compost? So far the system is in 'working progress' with lots of room for improvements. Yet at least at the end of the day these beautiful Scarlet Amaranth beds never fail to make us smile :) #notill #csa #organic #marketgardening #smallscalefarming #fourseasonfarming
This is our first year on this soil. All new plots and all new beds. We are practicing no-till market gardening as we learned from the best @singingfrogsfarm . It's incredible how fast soil can come alive by allowing biology to work its magic. Don't be deceived by their cute name and shiny red coats, these critters are vicious! They will be chowing on the bugs that chow on our seedlings. Blue eeeeeeeeggs! Our little Araucana hens have started to lay their beautiful little blue eggs. We have a French Wheaten Maran rooster in with them. The Maran boys come from lovely dark brown eggs. We're hoping that by cross breeding the two we might get the next generation to lay olive coloured eggs. Seedlings. These little veg babies are being sown and planted out weekly in the market garden. If we want a constant supply of food for our CSA members and restaurant buddies then weekly seed sowing is crucial.
